Summary
Sydney takes an Uber to her hair salon. The driver, Drew, locks the doors. Sydney uneasily recalls her ex-husband’s claims that she is paranoid. Drew, a former cop, laments the alleged criminal state of the neighborhood and claims “it would be a great place to live if there were just more…civilized people” (87). Drew drops Sydney off one street away from the salon, and his Uber profile disappears from Sydney’s phone. At the salon, Sydney hears that her teenage neighbor Preston has been arrested for possession, though nobody witnessed the police discover drugs. Sydney learns another neighbor had been forced to sell his home to pay legal fees after a similar ordeal.
