Emily
Emily is, arguably, the protagonist of the novel. She is an incredibly talented and intelligent woman. She left a career at Runway magazine as Miranda Priestly's first assistant in order to work for herself as a PR agent. Her old boss, however, is constantly trying to get her to come back and work for her, because no one is as talented and skilled as Emily is at assisting her.
But Emily values freedom and independence over everything else, and so she is resistant to working for anyone but herself. As a PR agent, she is very skilled and talented, but in the world of Hollywood where youth and social media count for more than experience and wisdom, Emily finds herself being phased out by the younger and cooler Olivia Belle, who steals all her clients.
