Narrator
The narrator is never named in the novel. This is because when an author does not name a narrator it allows the narrator to be seen as any person. This particular story is about an Indian writer married for four months to a Communist college lecturer, but because the author does not give her a name, the narrator could be any woman in any abusive relationship anywhere in the world, thus universalizing the experience of the narrator.
The narrator is a writer and finds much of her identity from this role. Once she gets married, however, her husband starts to cut her off from this aspect of her identity just as he does other parts of her identity.
