Summary
In Chapter 1 begins on Tuesday, October 30, 1984. Winston and his wife Marie woke up in the early hours of the morning when an airplane crash-landed nearby. As the county sheriff, Winston headed to the small local airport to investigate the disturbance. On the way, he contemplated his chances of winning the election coming up in a week’s time. His opponent, Bradley Frye, was much younger and wealthier than him. Winston remembered Frye as a racist bully and troublemaker, but now he was a prominent businessman and developer, continuing the work of his rich father. Winston was worried about the financial consequences of losing his job, especially because Marie had cancer. Winston was also worried about his daughter Colleen, who had recently lost her baby.
