Summary

In Chapter 4, which begins at 8:35 p.m., Maurice makes a toast to Noreen McDonagh, his sister-in-law. Maurice credits Noreen for Sadie’s father accepting him. Maurice also explains that Noreen solved part of the mystery of the coin.

When Maurice met Sadie’s father, Michael McDonagh, he was overwhelmed by Michael’s size as well as the impression that Michael cared nothing for him. The trip to meet Sadie’s parents included a visit to Sadie’s sister, Noreen, who lived at Saint Catherine’s, an institution. Sadie said that Noreen had what was called melancholy and explained that Sadie got very depressed and could lash out when things were not going as she wanted them to.
