Summary

Chapter 3 records Maurice’s toast to his stillborn daughter, Molly. It is 7:47 p.m. Maurice tells Kevin that he has a picture of Kevin on his christening day in his pocket. He describes the way Sadie looks in the picture, he saw the same happiness on Sadie’s face when she was pregnant with Molly.

Maurice describes how he and Sadie had been trying to have a baby ever since they got married, but month after month they had no success. When a new doctor came to town, Sadie and Maurice began following her cycles, like the doctor suggested, and Sadie got pregnant. Sadie was convinced from the beginning that the baby was a girl. She was happy and getting good reports from the doctor. Maurice’s business was going well.
