Summary

In Chapter 2, Maurice makes his first toast to his older brother, Tony, at 7:05 p.m. Tony was about five years older than Maurice. Maurice idolized Tony and followed him around the farm trying to prove he could do everything that Tony could do. When Maurice was asked what he wanted to be when he grew up, he said he wanted to be Tony.

At Rainsford National School, the teacher referred to Maurice as “Big Man” (35) a nickname that Tony used for Maurice from that point forward. Maurice struggled to learn his ABC's. Tony encouraged Maurice and worked with him, but Maurice’s reading skills never improved. It was only because of Tony’s coaxing that Maurice continued to attend school.
