The Soul
The novel explores the definition and purpose of the soul. To a contemporary culture that has drifted from its interest in things sacred, the novel preaches the central importance of the soul, not the heart, not the mind. Those who follow their hearts here are inevitably entangled in lust and ultimately in families defined by friction, division, and grudges. And those who follow the mind end up in libraries and classrooms, isolated and irrelevant. The soul defines the highest achievement for humanity. No one, not the theologians whose works Joe pores over, not his mentors in seminary, not his fellow priests, not even the Archbishop has a complete understanding of the nature and purpose of the soul. The novel argues the importance of maintaining that mystery as essential to defining a meaningful life in a culture that is now-oriented and materialistic.
