Chapters 43 and 44 Summary

In Chapter 43, Gilberts wakes up the next morning to Amy telling him that he has to talk to Ellen about how guys are. Gilbert goes to Ellen's room and finds her reading National Geographic, which Ellen uses Gilbert to distract him from his purpose. When Gilbert starts to talk to Ellen about underage drinking, Ellen yells at Gilbert that he is not her father. Gilbert goes to put gas in his truck and Melanie drives by and waves for Gilbert to follow her to the cemetery. Melanie confesses about her affair with Ken and that she knows Gilbert was having an affair with Betty. Melanie suggests that they have an affair together to comfort each other, but Gilbert says no.

In Chapter 44, Gilbert goes to the Dairy Dream and finds three of the Burger Barn construction workers inside. When Gilbert walks...
