Summary
Leonel takes Carolyn to meet his ex-wife Margarita at La UCA, the Catholic University. Margarita confronts Carolyn, asking Carolyn in Spanish if she considers El Salvador “su laboratorio” (116).
Shortly afterwards, there is an accident on the road outside the city involving Margarita’s aunt. Leonel take Carolyn to investigate. Leonel takes Carolyn to stay with Margarita. Margarita offers Carolyn some advice: “You have to be aware here, very aware, but more important, you have to be your own person. You have to think for yourself” (127). In the morning, Margarita’s attitude towards Carolyn has softened. She invites Carolyn to come with her to La UCA. There, Carolyn meets with two of the Jesuit priests, including Father Ignacio Ellacuría. Margarita then takes Carolyn to another university campus, one occupied by the government.
