Summary
Chapter 9 is titled “His Bargain.” Eoin and Anne go to the pawnshop while Thomas runs an errand. The pawnbroker, Mr. Kelly, is surprised when Eoin introduces Anne as his mother, but asks no questions other than how he can help. Anne and Mr. Kelly come to an agreement on a price for her earrings. Anne asks what he would pay for her ring as well (the ring she found in Eoin's envelop after her arrival in Ireland). Eoin interrupts, offering to sell the button he got from Sean because he wants to help Anne. She insists he keep the button and makes him understand the significance of it. Eoin agrees, but points out that Thomas told Anne not to sell her ring. Mr. Kelly increases his price for the earrings and says she should keep the ring, citing the fact that he sold...
