Point of View

This is a Young Adult Bildungsroman or coming of age story. It was written from the first person point of view of the protagonist, ten-year-old KB. The choice to use the first person narration of a child forms and develops the entire novel to come. One of the primary problems KB has with the adults in her life is that they do not tell her what it is that she wants to hear. They protect her from some of the harsh truths of life. While this is frustrating to KB, eventually her mother tells her that they want her to be a child and to be able to enjoy the pleasures of childhood without having to worry about the issues of the adult world.
