Summary

KB finds her father’s dead body. It is in the space where her “old bike’s training wheels turned rusted” (1). She calmly goes to tell her mother. Her mother starts screaming which scares KB, and KB starts screaming. The screaming is more terrifying than her father’s body. Both the police and her mother have referred to her father as a fiend. On days when her mother called her father a fiend, the basement stairs would have an awful smell.

Part 1 occurs in June 1995. In Chapter 1, KB is in the car with her sister, Nia and her mother. KB’s favorite book is Anne of Green Gables. It is the third time KB is reading it. She does not know anyone who talks like Anne does, but still KB relates to Anne. Sometimes KB tries to talk like Anne...
