Summary
In Chapter 13, Colonel Kethros arrives in Madame El Ward’s office looking for Amir and Vanna. “Where did they go, Nimra?” (114).
She denies ever having seen them, despite the Colonel offering clear evidence that she knows their whereabouts.
Madame el Ward calls the gymnasium camp “hell” and refutes the Colonel’s claim that they are in a war zone (114). Kethros threatens to arrest her.
In Chapter 14, the Calypso nearly collided with a freighter ship, causing panic amongst the passengers. “Suddenly the passengers began fighting with one another…from below the passengers in the lower deck were screaming” (118). Mohamed fired a shot from his pistol into the air and “the silence that followed the blast was total” (119). “The two vessels passed, the distance between them close enough to swim” (120).
Amir smelled the stench of the “human bodies in need of washing” (121).
