Summary
In Chapter 7, Amir waits in the Hermes’ unused farmhouse for Vanna to return with food. “Amir begins to suspect she might not come back” (63). He fondles the bell shaped locket around his neck, admiring the picture of his mother and wishing he hadn’t been so difficult when the pictures were taken. “He falls into a stupor,” but soon is woken by a young couple traversing the yard who look “emaciated and journey-worn” (64).
Before he has a chance to call out to them, a woman who “looks to Amir exactly like [Vanna]” holds them at gunpoint, firing a warning shot and forcing them to their knees (64). Vanna’s father arrives and is ordered by his wife to call the police. An unnamed officer with a pronounced limp arrives and his soldiers take the couple away.
