Skinny Black Dress

A skinny black dress is what Sophie wants to wear to the Halloween Dance, though her mother disapproves, and convinces Sophie to go with a different dress instead. Sophie, however, secretly buys and wears the dress to the dance, only to be discovered by her mother wearing the dress after the dance. This leads to temporary rift between mother and daughter.

Sketchbook

A sketchbook is carried by Sophie everywhere she goes. A sketchbook is also carried by Murphy everywhere he goes. The two make sketches of people, still life objects, and other subjects in their sketchbooks as they go around alone, and together.

Pencils

Pencils are what areused by Sophie and by Murphy to sketch in their sketchbooks. Professional drawing pencils are obtained by Sophie with her Hanukkah money, and she gives some of them as a gift to Murphy for Christmas.
