Cambridge, Massachusetts, is the home city of Sophie, her parents, and Rachel and Grace and their families. It is where Sophie and her friends attend school and hang out in their free time. Cambridge, located just outside of Boston, is also home to a reservoir, and a pond deep in the woods which Sophie and Murphy come to call Valadon Pond.

Boston is the capital of Massachusetts. It is located near Cambridge, and is the location of the Ritz-Carlton and the Museum of Fine Arts, among others. Sophie takes a day vacation to Boston to see the sights and sounds while her friends are out of state over winter break. Boston is also a favorite place of Murphy, and he and Sophie begin to spend more and more time together in Boston.
