Summary
The narrator of “if a book is locked there’s probably a good reason for that don’t you think” writes in the second person. A woman steps out of the elevator. Her name is Eva and she is stylish and black, with a New York accent mixed with something more Midwestern. The other women in the office are impressed and begin dressing better and applying more makeup.
“You,” the main protagonist of the story, tries to make conversation with Eva. He works as a consultant helping companies decide which employees to keep and which to fire.
