Chapters 26 and 27 Summary
In Chapter 26, Evie's parents finally arrive at the hotel late that afternoon. Her mother seems to not know where she is, although she hugs Evie, one of the first things that she says is that she needs a bath. She is also angry with Evie for bringing only a cocktail dress for her to wear.
Later that evening, Beverly tries to explain to Evie that Peter was not who either of them had thought that he was. She tells Evie that Peter had been spending time with them only to get back at Joe because he believed Joe owed him money. Beverly believes the whole deal had been a misunderstanding and that Joe didn't really owe Peter anything, but that Peter was blackmailing him anyway. Evie begs her mother to tell her what really happened on the boat, but her mother...
