Chapters 4 and 5 Summary
In Chapter 4, when Joe had gone off to war, he had insisted that Evie and her mother move in with his mother. Her mother got a job selling ties at Lord and Taylor. Grandma Glad hounds her when she comes in late.
In the present, Evie runs to the door to meet Joe as soon as his car pulls into the driveway. He doesn't see her in the hallway and curses. She is surprised because it is unlike him. When she turns on the light and he sees her, he turns into the Joe that she knows. He takes her mother into his arms. To Evie, they represent love and glamor. When Grandma Glad tells Joe he's had a call looking for him, he become grouchy again.
