Role of Sexism in American Politics and Society

Clinton argues that she and other women face considerable sexism in politics, even if it not always apparent. The broadest example of this is the lack of representation Hillary notes that women make up a disproportionately low share of membership in Congress and other government institutions. This lack of representation becomes a self-fulfilling cycle. Because women do not see other women in positions of power, they themselves are hesitant to run for office. The political environment is dominated by white men and thus may be unwelcoming to candidates and officials who do not fit that narrow demographic. Further, voters are unaccustomed to women leaders and react negatively, if unconsciously, to their campaigns. Because Americans have never seen a woman President, they have difficulty seeing someone like Clinton in that role.
