Identity
One of the main themes in this book is identity. Mclean struggles throughout the book to figure out who she is. In Montford Falls she had called herself Eliza and had been pretty much like her former self, but she had had a new confidence because she didn't care what happened to her. She had joined the athletic crowd in this school. When she had moved to Petree, she called herself Lizbet and had become a queen of drama. She had worn dark turtlenecks and pulled her hair into a bun and started smoking. She had enjoyed dance and drama. In her next town, Westcott, she becomes the exact opposite. Calling herself Beth, she had joined the student council, worked on the yearbook and school paper and tutored children. She had also helped organize fundraisers.
