Eggs
The eggs which appear in many of Nina's magic realism stories represent the significance and omnipresence of fertility in a woman's life. It demonstrates that questions and issues of fertility dominate much of Nina's mind as she explores her first sexual relationship. Her own fertility is contrasted to her mother's miscarriages through the image of chicken eggs which are stolen from the hen and turned into food instead of becoming baby chicks.
Wishbone Dolls
The Wishbone Dolls which are designed, customized, and used by men as sex toys are symbolic of how male sexual desire shapes how the ideal female body is defined, used, and valued. The Wishbone Dolls, as inanimate, lifeless figures, also symbolize how female agency is often surpassed, ignored, or de-valued in favour of sexual satisfaction.
