Summary
Chapter 46 brings Peter and his family to Isaac's to celebrate New Year's Eve. While Evangeline is kind and indulgent to Peter's three young daughters, she makes it clear she does not trust Peter. The Clearness Committee convenes on Isaac's behalf. George has selected Ralph Prouser and Abigail Groff to serve. Isaac is displeased with Ralph's selection as the two have a tense relationship. However, he approves of Abigail as he has always been fond of her. George reviews the Committee's purpose: to help Isaac hear the "small quiet voice of the soul" (259). When Isaac reflects on the gift the members are giving him, he fills with gratitude. Isaac recalls a time when Jonah and Daniel were bickering while kayaking with him and Katherine. They stumbled across a large group of sea lions determined to protect their territory. An exchange between the boys prompted...
