Summary

In Chapter 40, Altha’s story continues. Months after Altha suggested to Grace they kill John, Altha spoke to Grace again. Grace said she had not been pregnant again. When Altha reminded Grace of her plan, Grace informed Altha that men of John’s age did not just die. She believed the doctor would realize he had been poisoned and that Altha had done it. She did not want Altha’s death on her conscience.

In Chapter 41, which continues Violet’s story, Violet took the tansy petal tincture and suffered an abortion as she had hoped.

In Chapter 42, which continues Kate’s story, Simon sends her text messages telling her that he will see her very soon. Kate’s car is in the shop, so she has no way to leave. She decides to hide in the attic.
