Summary
In Chapter 33, Kate’s story continues. Emily tells Kate her husband found the box of books when he was helping to clean Orton Hall. Among the books is a copy of The Brothers Grimm. Kate finds a handwritten letter inside.
Kate understands as she reads the letter that Violet was raped, an incident that drove her to consider suicide. Kate wonders what gave Violet the strength to go on living. Violet refers to a man with green eyes in her letter. Using a picture she finds in an old newspaper, Kate determines that the old man at Orton Hall is Frederick. Kate decides she wants to be like Violet, who built her own life despite everything that happened to her, and protect the life she has started to build for herself.
