Summary

In the Prologue, set in 1619 and narrated by Altha Weyward, Altha describes the inhumane conditions while in jail in Crows Beck.

In Chapter 1, set in 2019 and narrated from the viewpoint of Kate, Kate tries to pretend nothing is different when her abusive husband, Simon, comes home from work. She does not want him to know she is preparing to leave him. He senses something is wrong and grabs her arm. He claims she has been lying to him and says he knows she left the house even though she says she stayed home all day. As Simon goes out again, he warns her that he will know if she disobeys him and leaves.

When Simon is gone, Kate takes the secret phone she bought since Simon has been using her iPhone to track her, an envelope of cash, and takes off...
