Summary

Aunt Ranjan and Uncle Pavan arrive and surprise the three girls, who did not know they were coming. After Gopi told Uncle Pavan that Pa was talking to the their mother in the living room, even though she had been dead for nearly a year, he and Aunt Ranjan drove down to make sure things were ok.

While the girls go to bed and then go about their normal lives, Pa, Aunt Ranjan, and Uncle Pavan talk a lot. The three of them are very solemn and seem depressed. Pa takes Gopi to Western Lane to practice squash, and then sits down with her on a bench. He explains that things have been difficult since her mother died, and that he would like to send her to live with Uncle Pavan and Aunt Ranjan.
