Summary
In “Into Tennessee,” The Old Man lied to Woody and told him he "wired for the new driver” (138). He told Woody he would “buy [him] a ticket anywhere [he] wants to go” once they reached Memphis (138). Woody realized he was finally going to California, “the land of milk and honey” (138). Woody and the Old Man saw the circus and “the same panel truck we’d seen back in Maryland” (141). The Old Man “cussed under his breath” (140). Woody was forced to take a detour which led past a sign that read “COTTAGES FOR COLOREDS,” and to a bridge too short to fit for the truck (142). The truck became stuck under the bridge, and despite their best efforts, they could not remove it. They were saved by a black man who Woody called Moses.
