Point of View
The novel is told exclusively through the third person point of view, almost always following the lives of either Jack or Elizabeth. Through the narration, the reader is given access to some of Jack and Elizabeth’s feelings. The reader, for instance, understands Jack’s feelings of insecurity over the design choices in their forever home. The reader also is able to understand, at least in part, why Elizabeth is drawn to an open relationship similar to Kate and Kyle’s.
Because the narration follows the both of them, the reader is privy to insights that each of the characters hold that their spouse may not be privy to. For example, when Jack and Elizabeth are at the sex party, the reader hears Elizabeth’s conversation with Kyle as well as Jack’s conversation with Kate.
