Summary
Armide worries about her family’s finances. Alva is somewhat unexcited about having to leave her sisters behind after she gets married. She also worries about what will happen between herself and her new husband on her wedding night. The wedding will be postponed as William’s niece, Alice, dies unexpectedly due to illness. Alva is relieved but feels guilty.
Alva’s family is close to starvation as the wedding’s postponement strains their finances. Alva considers asking William for money to help. Her father’s health has continued declining and he mistakes her for her mother. Alva plans to sell their family heirlooms to make money. On her way to her dress designing appointment, Alva loses several precious belongings. Alva is shocked at the high price her dress will be, but she resolves to find a way to pay for it...
