Memory

Memory and nostalgia are key themes that the novel presents to readers. Belly, the main character, is the sort of person who is deeply invested in keeping her memories alive within herself. From her love life to her college selection, Belly values history and memory above all else in life. While this is not in and of itself a bad thing, it becomes dangerous when Belly gives more weight to the past than her present and future. Before the wedding, Belly asks Jeremiah if he remembers finding the stray dog, Rosie, on the beach when they were kids. She remembers Jeremiah finding the dog and taking care of her, then crying when they found the owners and had to give it back.
