Summary

In Chapter 1, Chike Ameobi, an officer in the Nigerian Army, talked to his friend and fellow soldier Yęmi Ọkẹ about their mutual misgivings regarding the actions of their commanding officer, Colonol Benatari. The colonel had ordered his men to kill a civilian woman who was supposedly harboring militants. Chike and Yęmi were stationed in the Nigerian Delta, where Chike could smell the burning of natural gas nearby where oil workers were drilling. He considered abandoning his post, but realized he knew no life outside of the military.

In Chapter 2, after two sentries were killed outside of the Army's camp, Colonel Benatari ordered his men to set fire to a nearby village and shoot the villagers as they attempted to flee. Chike and Yęmi refused and deserted amid the chaos.
