Summary

Although, at first, Mr. Howlands resented his work as District Officer for taking him away from his land, over time he has come to enjoy it for the way it allows him to force people to do what he wants. Like Mr. Howlands’ wife, however, Jacobo remains unsuccessful in taking vengeance against Ngotho, because Mr. Howlands remains unwilling to act. He does become alarmed though, when Jacobo reveals that he has received three death threats, and thinks that Ngotho is behind them.
