Summary
In “Such Common Life,” “1. Protein,” Dr. Edwina Ditmus and her caretaker Ida discuss imaginary friends during one of their sessions. Edwina is surprised that Ida did not have an imaginary friend, which Ida guesses is more common for American children. Edwina has a scientist’s mind and likes “to ask questions” until Ida admits she does not “have an answer” (103). Edwina is 88 and worked in a lab for years. Until recently, she also “maintained her regular slot at the ice rink,” where she originally connected with Ida (104).
After telling Ida about her imaginary friends, Edwina lies awake remembering Cottage Cheese, Georgie Porgie, and Tom Thumb-Thumb. She wonders what would have happened if she had not let the friends go, and reflects upon her life and coming death.
Ida lies on the couch and checks her email. She deletes one from her husband...
