Summary

In Chapter 1, Maddie Forest agreed to go Theo Stephen’s birthday party only because Theo was one of Alexa’s best friends, and Alexa, who was one of Maddie’s best friends, had asked her to go. Maddie did not like parties and she did not like Theo. She thought he was “boring, self-important, and pedantic” (1). At the party, Theo hugged Alexa but Maddie noticed he stopped smiling when he saw Maddie.

When Maddie first met Theo three years prior, she had noticed he was well dressed and thought she might like him. He had bragged about going to Harvard and seemed condescending when he learned she had gone to a community college, and was starting her own styling business. She told him off and walked away before he had a chance to belittle her further.
