Summary
Chapter 38 is told from Felicia's perspective. She is staying in an apartment owned by a friend of Halina's. An old Jewish man is also hidden there. Mila's cousin Franka arrives to check on Felicia, and shortly thereafter, Nazi police arrive as well. Franka hides Felicia and Felicia overhears as the Nazis shoot the old man and then leave.
In Chapter 39, Addy checks for letters from his family at the post office in Rio and reads newspaper articles about the war. To relieve his stress, he begins to write a song.
In Chapter 40, Mila is working as a nanny and housekeeper for a German family in Warsaw. Mila's employer's seamstress tells her about a Catholic convent on the outskirts of town where Jewish children are being kept safe. The employer's son overhears this conversation and reports it to his mother. The woman confronts Mila...
