Summary

Chapter 30 returns to Mila's perspective as she continues to dig the graves. She watches as a woman approaches the German guard and talks to him, obviously flirting. When he seems receptive, Mila tells Felicia to run to the woman and pretend that she is her mother. The ruse works, the woman pretends that Mila is her daughter. Then, Mila herself takes a chance and approaches the guard, offering her wedding ring in exchange for her safety. Another woman is shot dead by the Ukrainians as this happens. Mila, Felicia, and the woman who was flirting with the guard are permitted to reboard the train, and they hear sobbing and gunshots once they are inside.
