Summary
In June of 1941, the Germans and Soviets break their alliance. The Soviet police murder thousands of citizens in Lvov, and the Germans blame this violence on the Jews. The Ukrainian militia in Lvov murders thousands of Jews in response.
In Chapter 21, Jakob and Bella are in hiding during the pogrom, and Bella learns from an outside source that her sister Anna is missing. Bella assumes the worst.
In Chapter 22, it is July, and Halina has received an urgent plea from Sol to return to Radom. Jakob, Bella, and Franka are already en route. Adam has been taken to a German work camp outside Lvov, and Halina goes there with a set of cutlery she hopes will be enough to bribe the guards to release him. She tells the guard that she and Adam are not Jewish, there has been a mistake. She worries...
