Summary
In September 1939, the Polish Army surrenders. Its territory is divided up between Germany, which occupies Radom, and the Soviet Union, which occupies Lvov.
In Chapter 7, Bella arrives at Jakob's house in Lvov. He answers the door and they are reunited. She is shocked to learn that Poland has fallen. Jakob explains that Genek and Adam are in Lvov, but Mila's husband Selim is missing. Jakob proposes marriage and Bella accepts.
Chapter 8 is told from Halina's perspective. The Germans have forced her to labor on a beet farm, a far cry from her former life as a medical lab assistant. Riding to the farm on a Nazi truck, Halina sees an old friend from school who ignores her, quickly looking away. When Halina arrives home, she greets Mila who has been working in a uniform workshop. Mila secretly takes Felicia to work with her...
