Summary

In “Danvers vs. Salem” (150), Sue Yoon was driving with Abby Putnam, AJ Johnson, and Becca Bjelica in the car. They were on their way to Salem with the rest of the team, all traveling in various cars because the school bus that was meant to take them there had refused to start. It was Halloween and also Julie Minh’s 18th birthday. As they were driving, Sue was attempting to recite lines she was memorizing for a play that it eventually becomes clear was Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, in which she was playing Tituba, a slave. Her attempts at a suitable accent led to tensions between her and AJ Johnson, who privately took issue with Sue’s equating of playing a black character with “island attitude” (152).
