Summary
In Chapter 2, on his way out of the city, Samphel remembered Lhamo. “In a lifetime of days forgotten,” he continued holding onto his time with Lhamo (272).
For years, Samphel had worked as an antiquities dealer. His business stole artifacts from their captive countries and sold them. The day he learned he “had a seven-year-old daughter,” he and his business partner were supposed to enact the Yumbu Lhakhang operation” (273). Shortly after discovering the plan had gone awry, Tenkyi showed up at his store. She informed Samphel that Lhamo was still married, but had given birth to his child. They made arrangements for Samphel to see Lhamo and meet Dolma. Not long later, Samphel learned that his parents’ possessions could not be recovered from the homeland. He had been trying to find them for years.
