Summary

In Part II: “Sisters,” “Lhamo,” Chapter 1, “Pokhara, Nepal, Tsemo Seymakar Tibetan Refugee Settlement, 1973,” although Lhamo and her people had “no country,” they made a home of their new camp (133). The Nameless Saint became their protector and guide. Over time, Ashang became determined to “find out his identity” (134). Lhamo was disinterested in the Saint’s name, but believed he belonged “with Samphel, whose uncle was chosen as [his] last keeper” (134).

Although she had not seen Samphel in years, Lhamo felt “tethered . . . to him” (134). Shortly after returning from Kathmandu, Lhamo’s caretakers insisted she forget the past so as not to “go mad”(136).
