With this quote, Chang draws a connection between insecurity and hate, nothing how one can be leveraged into another. In the next chapter of the book, Chang will expand upon this idea with his discussion of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, noting how Trump leveraged the insecurities of his white base into support for his campaign and its xenophobic policies.
