Summary
In Chapter 43, when Duchess ran out of money for the bus in Colorado she hitched a ride with a truck driver to a small town in Utah. Even though her gut told her not to do so, she went into a bar and asked for a Coke. She realized too late she did not have enough money, but the man pushed it toward her anyway.
Duchess listened as the regulars sang, accompanied by a guitar. None of them could hold a tune. She walked to the guitar player. He asked if she wanted to sing and she nodded. The men became quiet as she bared her soul through song. When she was done, the man behind the bar handed her an envelope full of money. He pointed to a sign advertising the monthly singing contest.
