Summary
Chapter One, “Annie Oh” - In first-person, present-tense narration, Annie Oh contemplates her present situation (engaged to be married to Viveca, the wealthy, successful art dealer who has long been a champion and promoter of her work) and her past. As she reflects on her unease about her wealthy lifestyle (which includes paying for the services of her toothless black housekeeper Minnie), she is particularly concerned about the number of expensive wedding dresses that she has to choose from, including one that Viveca has shipped from Greece, where she is visiting; it is a dress made by a company called Gaia (named after an ancient Greek earth goddess). Annie, who is revealed in narration to be 52 years old, also reflects on how much she loves Viveca, how good their sex-life is, and how there are many things...
