Importance: This quote quickly establishes the themes of nihilism present in Henry’s narration. After experiencing so much grief and pain, it is clear that Henry is searching for a way to cope with it. At this point in his story, the easiest way he can is to believe that nothing truly matters in the end. Henry’s worldview is skewed towards the idea that his pain, other’s problems, and humility’s desire to mean something all amounts to nothing as everyone will die anyway. To Henry, humanity is as important as a string of ants: ignored and often forgotten in the greater world.
