Summary
Chapter Five takes place in May; it is a retelling of the past. Marin was working on her school English assignment. She was studying the role of ghosts in Jane Eyre. She was reading said novel when her grandfather entered the house. She asked him if he received any letters from Birdie. After bringing in groceries, he retreated to his back portion of their house, and Marin imagined him reading the letters. She wondered, “who was this Birdie” (54). Marin worried that she held Gramps back from going to Birdie. Gramps interrupted her reading; he told her that he wanted to show her something but that Marin could not touch it. He then unrolled a deep green dress, claiming it was Birdie’s. He told Marin that he wanted her to give him something of hers and that it was a dress she wore...
