Summary
Chapter Three takes place in May; it is a retelling of the past. It begins with the image of Marin having slept through her alarm. She awoke to hear her grandfather (whom she refers to as Gramps) singing from another room. Still singing, he knocked on her door. Marin occupied the front bedroom, while Gramps lived in the back two rooms. They shared a living room, dining room, and kitchen. He never came into Marin’s room, and she had never entered his. They spent much time together in “the in-between rooms” (20). They took turns doing laundry but left the other’s things folded on the dinning room table in respect for their individual privacy.
Marin opened her door to find her grandfather holding a mug of coffee. He offered her a ride to school, which she accepted. As they drove, Marin remembered...
