Chapter 56

Ed agrees to teach Connell to drive which is a hair-raising experience for both of them. Ed starts screaming at Connell the minute he pulls away from the garage and doesn’t stop until they return. Ed is always sorry but Connell decides to take driver’s ed at school. Connell notices that Ed is coming in and out of his old self more frequently.

Chapter 57

Eileen tapes cards on the microwave that read, “start” and “press here.” She sets the cook time for Ed’s lunch before she leaves for the day. Ed is not eating much and has stopped reading. He can usually deal with easy errands like buying milk or getting a newspaper. She always sees that he has money in his wallet. He gets to know the storekeepers who help him at the register.
